Story WinthropPark created by Michael Newman

The Green Dog Advisory Committe has initiated a study of the Noise and condition at the Winthrop Park. The first survey was taken on Saturday 9 October 2006. The photos shown here were all taken between 10:30 and 11:30.

9:00 to 10:00 Overall Notes

I was struck with how quiet the park was (especially with the number of dogs and owners enjoying the space). The owners were able to control their dogs and when there was barking, (which was infrequent), all managed their dogs within seconds. That said, however, there were two outliers: 1) "Murphy," a beagle who had multiple episodes of barking - and his noise is less of a bark and more of a grating and extremely disturbing donkey braying - I understand how neighbors would be upset. Especially in the morning. 2) "Chloe," a yellow lab – had a male owner with little control over her barking and it was allowed to continue for several minutes unchecked - definitely problematic.

10:30 to 11:30 Overall Notes

Overall the park was quiet and uneventful. A large number of dogs were present for the entire period. The noise of the dogs was overshadowed by the noise of the children. I remained in the park from 10:30 to 11:30 and counted barks. There were a total of 9 bark events of any kind. Almost all were a single yip. The one outlier was also a beagle who barked at another dog when trying to get him to play with him. Even this event did not seem particularly objectionable.

In this period I observed a single dog deposit feces that was not collected immediately by the owner. No one approached the owner or picked up the pile. About 10 minutes after the deposit I collected it.

I carefully walked the park and collected all of the lose feces I could find. A total of 24 deposits were picked up. Most were quite old, including one that I had noticed in my inspection prior to our last meeting. I would consider this much more of a problem than any noise I heard.

I spoke to three distinct sets of owners. All would welcome a park email list. Two groups were unaware of Amory. Two sets of the three owners expressed concern about the lack of a complete enclosure there and would probably not use it. One of those two felt that her dog was not yet well enough trained for an unenclosed park. The owners all felt that the number of dogs present was a little lighter than typical of a nice weekend day.

12:00 to 13:00

I did not get the name of the dog who was barking for about 1/2 hour from noon to 12:30. I think I can find out. At the other times, owners definitely made prompt efforts to silence their dogs. There were many incidents of outburst of barking, followed by shouts of dogs names, or "Shhh" s.

I checked at Amory for # of dogs. At noon, there were 4, at 12:30, 3. During this entire time there were no people in the rose garden, and in the playground, briefly, 1 child with adult.
